Discover the Legacy of André Steiner: A Masterpiece of Mid-Century Modern Design

André (Andrew) Steiner, often referred to as "the Jewish Schindler," was a remarkable figure in the world of architecture and humanitarianism. Born in Hungary, Steiner’s journey was anything but ordinary. He was a renowned Jewish Hungarian-American architect who studied at the prestigious Bauhaus, a school synonymous with modern design. His life took a dramatic turn in 1940 when he was briefly imprisoned in a Nazi concentration camp. In a courageous escape, Steiner and his family fled to Slovakia, seeking refuge from the horrific persecution of Jews during World War II.

Steiner’s architectural talents did not go unnoticed. Coveted by the Nazis, he cleverly maneuvered his position, bribing German and Slovak officials to prevent the deportation of thousands of Jews. As a key member of the clandestine Jewish "Working Group," he persuaded the Nazis to establish three work camps for Jews, arguing that only Jewish laborers could execute his architectural visions. His actions are credited with saving approximately 7,000 lives—nearly six times the number saved by Oskar Schindler. After the war, he lived by hiding in the mountains with his wife and son until the liberation of Slovakia in early 1945.

Following the Communist takeover of Czechoslovakia in 1948, Steiner immigrated to the United States, eventually making Atlanta, Georgia, his home. There, he resumed his architectural career, designing notable structures such as the Ahavath Achim Synagogue and numerous mid-century homes, many of which have been lovingly restored. André Steiner passed away at the impressive age of 100, leaving behind a legacy of resilience and creativity, resting peacefully at Oakland Cemetery.
